Check if there is a 'TAP' adapter under -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network Connections. If there is, uninstall through Device Manager and after that, run the Toolkit, go to settings (bottom right), under the 'Localhost bypass' tab, select 'Use DLL injection' as suggested by dpiralis.
This one may not be an issue for you, but perhaps you've seen an answer. The TAP installer fails, so not much sense in proceeding....

TAP failing to install under Windows 10

Hi Jonathon,Not sure whether this is what caused it to appear to work or notbut try copying the tpinstall.exe from the 32bit or the 64bit folder( depending on your Windows 10 version ) to the folderC:WindowsSystem32When I click on NETWORK ADAPTORSin DEVICE MANAGERI now see TAP-Windows Adaptor V9after the following commandtapinstall install OemWin2k.inf TAP0901but I had to do it in full like this>>tapinstall C:UsersJohnDownloadstap-driver-32_64tap-driver-32_6464-bitOemWin2k.inf TAP0901after copying tapinstall to the C:WindowsSystem32folder as mentioned earlier.Even though it retuned as 'Installation failed'Windows says the driver is working correctly when I look inDEVICE MANAGER.I hope this helps. Now I'm going to attempt to install the other parts for IPV6.The above line is in the comments lines of the .inf file as follows; INSTALL/REMOVE DRIVER; tapinstall install OemWin2k.inf TAP0901; tapinstall update OemWin2k.inf TAP0901; tapinstall remove TAP0901Regards,John

Hi again Jonathan,Sorry I typed your first name incorrectly last time.I also meant that the commandreturned 'INSTALLATION FAILED'but somehow DEVICE MANAGER states it is working. To check if you have 32 or 64 bit version of Windowssimply double click on SYSTEMin CONTROL PANEL and next to 'System type'it will show whether you are running 64 bit or the 32 bit version of Windows.Best regards,John
Hi,if you have a 64 bit system, the driver needs to be signed. This driver isnt signed, so you have to reeboot with tapping F8 F8 F8 until you see the Startup Settings. Choose Disable driver signature enforcement and after this you can install the driverThis solved my problem.Greetings Johannes
Or better: install the current driver as delivered by OpenVPN as that one is signed. No need to completely foil the security of your system...

- Are you able to install TAP driver (NDIS 6) from OpenVPN?
https://openvpn.net/index.php/download/community-downloads.html - edited November 2015Hi, thank you for answering, I downloaded the driver from OpenVPN, but it still gives me an error after install, and after I get the error and look at device manager there are No VPN adapters under networks adapters...So I can't follow the guide that was posted before, about adding value to registry key etc..
- edited November 2015I gather you saw this thread. There are a few other things might be worth trying. Did you try running the installer in Windows 8 compatibility mode or as Administrator?
Oh, if it is a driver signing issue then I'd open a ticket about it. - Hi Koi,Thank you for your post regarding your the tap requiring to be reinstalled. The latest version of our PIA client (v.47) has removed all previous issues with TAP installations for Windows. If you are trying to install v.47 and still get TAP installation errors, then your issue is related to security software. If you have not already done so, please remove the old version of the client and install v.47 from our website:Please note: When you install our client, you must do so on a Windows admin user account, and launch the client by right clicking it and choosing 'Run as administrator'. The elevated system changes involved in running a VPN requires full admin privileges to run properly. If this does not resolve the issue, then your issue is related to security software:Our application runs as the following executables,C:Program Filespia_managerpia_manager.exeC:Program Filespia_managerinstaller_win.exeC:Program Filespia_managerpia_traypia_tray.exe%LOCALAPPDATA%Tempocr<randomcharacters>.tmpbinrubyw.exeCan you ensure that none of these are being blocked or filtered by your security software? If they are, please try adding exceptions for each of the executables listed above.Security software can still block passively while disabled. You would need to enter the file exclusions regardless.Failing that, you would try disabling your security software, reboot your computer in Safe Mode, install the client, then reboot normally, then retry the file exclusions. This will ensure the files are not blocked from installing by your security software, and the file exclusions can work properly. Are you using Kaspersky Total Security 2016 by any chance? It seems that version of Kaspersky removes portions of our software, regardless of any configured file exclusions. Some users have had success with Kaspersky by reverting back to the 2015 version.Cheers PIA!
- edited November 2015Hello,
I manage to install PIA properly in my PC, by removing Kaspersky, then reinstalling the adapter + PIA and then reinstalling Kaspersky again, now there is no problem.
Thank you all - I had this issue after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and then upgrading PIA. The installation hung for a long time on 'Installing TAP driver...' and then it failed with a message to Reinstall TAP Driver through the Start menu. When I did that, it failed again. My only malware protection was Windows Defender. I resolved the TAP driver issue by opening Windows Defender and turning off Real-time protection. Then I selected Reinstall TAP Driver in the Windows Start menu and it installed with no problem. Afterward, I went back to Windows Defender and turned Real-time protection back on.
- I tired to install with real time protection off but still am unable to install the tap driver.
- To potentially help others, I'll add what fixed the issue for me:I had this exact same problem on two different PCs the other day (PIA v.53 client, Windows 10 64-bit, November update installed).I tried everything I could find -- rebooting, running as admin, uninstalling other VPNs, disabling firewalls, disabling virus scanners, etc. Nothing let the TAP driver install; it always failed. While poking around, I went into the control panel, opened up the network connections panel, and then clicked on the 'VPN' section on the sidebar. It didn't open; just hung there for a minute or so. I closed the window as it was unresponsive. The next time I tried the 'Reinstall TAP driver' PIA shortcut, it went through without a problem and the VPN worked. I didn't think anything of it until a couple hours later, the exact same steps fixed the TAP driver problem on my other system, too.tl;dr -- Try this:- Network & internet- It won't open and will just hang for a few seconds- Reinstall TAP driver (should work now)I have no idea why it worked, but it did on two different systems.
This worked for me with one exception. My VPN window opened up and didn't hang. I just hit cancel and reran the install software. Installed no problem this time.
You, sir, are a LEGEND! I had been trying to get my head around this for hours today, all to no avail. Until I read your post.To potentially help others, I'll add what fixed the issue for me:Try this:- Go to control panel- Click on the 'VPN' menu on the left side- It won't open and will just hang for a few seconds- Reinstall TAP driver (should work now)I have no idea why it worked, but it did on two different systems.
Thank you!- Hey guys, I have the same issue, and I'd love to try what PIA_user_425 wrote, as it obviously worked for many people. Unfortunately I'm not following the Control Panel step - I have no such 'VPN' menu on the left side? Could you please post a screenshot of the Control Panel with this?

- Thanks warpdrive, I was actually using the proper Windows Control panel, not the fancy Windows 10 one.
Good news is that IT WORKED! I have no idea if it made any difference, but at least it looks good now.
Thanks all. - I have been fighting this problem for 4 days. Today I tried to reinstall TAP driver in safe mode, unsuccessful. I then shut down, rebooted (normally) and opened 'device manager' control panel, double-clicked 'TAP-Windows Adapter V9'. PROPERTIES window opened. Selected DRIVER tab, clicked UPDATE DRIVER & updated driver. New driver is v.9.0.0.21 (April 21, 2016). Viola! PIA connected immediately! I have not exited PIA & tried to re-open it. I think I will just enjoy today and hope for the best tomorrow.
- Follow-up. Turned on computer today, admittedly a bit anxious. PIA opened and operating as should. HURRAY!!!!!
Any ideas how to troubleshoot it on Win7?To potentially help others, I'll add what fixed the issue for me:I had this exact same problem on two different PCs the other day (PIA v.53 client, Windows 10 64-bit, November update installed).I tried everything I could find -- rebooting, running as admin, uninstalling other VPNs, disabling firewalls, disabling virus scanners, etc. Nothing let the TAP driver install; it always failed. While poking around, I went into the control panel, opened up the network connections panel, and then clicked on the 'VPN' section on the sidebar. I reset my laptop,
Reinstalled windows, & when I reinstalled IPVanish it kept asking for the tap device & wouldn't install !!
So I uninstalled the latest IPVanish & installed an older version of IPVanish from March 2016 ,
Then I reinstalled the latest version & it worked !!
It didn't ask for the tap device !
So try installing an older version first then the new one afterwards to fix it ! - None of these worked for me.
I noticed when I would run installer_win I would get some errors in the command prompt relating to 'findstr' not recognized. I followed the instructions on https://stackoverflow.com/questions/10244181/findstr-is-not-recognized-as-an-internal-or-external-command: copy C:/Windows32/findstr.exe to your pia_manager directory. Then run the installer again as admin.
To find findstr.exe you might have to do a search
